War & Peace

  • Westbury Baptist Church 10425 Hillcroft Street Houston, TX, 77096 United States (map)

The Houston Choral Society will open its 2023-2024 Concert Season with "War and Peace," a program exploring the many facets of war and peace and humanity's response to it. The 90-member chorus will be joined by professional orchestra and soloists.

We invite you to join us for this dramatic program as it unfolds in works such as John Rutter's “Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace”, Kim André Arnesen's, “What is Peace?” as well as Paul Mealor's "In Flanders Fields." The concert will culminate in a performance of Joseph Haydn's Missa in tempore belli (Mass in Time of War), a title given by the composer himself due to the tumultuous conditions in Europe around 1796. The extended and dramatic passages written for the timpani in the final movement contributed to the nickname "Paukenmesse" ("Timpani Mass"). The rousing passages for timpani followed by the trumpets is a powerful proclamation of the central message of "grant us peace."

We hope that you will join us for an inspiring and a memorable evening of music. Mark your calendars and order your early bird tickets before it is too late!

Join us at 7pm for a special discussion about the program with Dr. Daniel Kramlich, Professor of Music, Houston Christian University!
