Founder/Artistic Director
Dr. Betty Devine, founder and director of The Houston Choral Society, has dedicated her career to delighting and inspiring audiences with choral music. She has been Minister of Worship Arts at The Foundry United Methodist Church for 22 years.
Dr. Devine holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Texas Tech University, a master’s degree in music from the University of Houston, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. She has served on the board of directors for the Texas Choral Directors Association and the Southwestern Division of the American Choral Directors Association.
Her career has included teaching in the public and private school systems at the secondary level, as well as at Houston Community College, where she was head of the Fine Arts Department. In 1996, she received an international award for teaching excellence.
Dr. Devine was recognized by the Association of Professional Vocal Ensembles (now Chorus America) in 1987 as the only woman in the United States to develop an independent professional chorus, The Houston Chamber Singers. Additionally, she is listed in Who’s Who in International Music and Notable Women in Texas.
