The Houston Choral Society is a professional-quality chorus dedicated to bringing audiences great choral music to enrich the soul and advance the choral arts. Founded in 1987, this choir is composed of passionate, experienced singers who perform a breadth of music from the great masters, contemporary composers, American heritage, musical theater, and opera. In addition to its musical vision of performing great orchestral music, the Choral Society also develops programming that allows audience members to connect with the music on an emotional level by taking them on a journey to explore a particular theme or idea through a diversity of style and genre that provokes thought, dazzles, and surprises.
In recent years, the group has presented a concert version of Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem, Johannes Brahms’Requiem in the original German, and also debuted a commissioned piece by Dr. Adolphus Hailstork called Set Me on a Rock. The Choral Society has joined voices with various choirs in the past and performed at many Houston venues. Our most recent collaboration was with the Prairie View A&M University Concert Chorale for our fall 2015 concert, “Shout for Joy.”
Always committed to community outreach, The Houston Choral Society is a partner with Cy-Hope, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make life better for the kids in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. We are continuing to explore ideas for developing a music initiative for the mission.
